This live improvisation is a marker of what became known as “MarioPop,” a post-apocalyptic genre of music that captures a singular trip through OMMWorld.
According to notes left alongside this recently unearthed video, the term “MarioPop” was first coined by Burt Sugarman in 2057:
“As Mario traveled through varying levels of reality, engaging with an otherworldly array of characters in MarioWorld, so too does the listener of MarioPop in OMMWorld. Each voice is a Merry Monster, each performance a narration of an extemporaneous journey within OMMWorld, a faithful recording of an exchange between the listener and whichever Monsters that choose to appear. MarioPop is a natural progression from The Monsters’ metamodern psychedelic pop first made popular in the 2020s.”
Captain Sarsaparilla modulates the console, randomly dialing in frequencies in search of monsters who wish to engage.
